Outdoor living in Galveston means planning for the weather
Outdoor living is a large part of life in Galveston, and the porch, patio or deck is where it happens. The Gulf Coast makes those spaces hard to use for much of the year: an intense Texas sun that can leave a patio empty through the middle of the day, mosquitoes once evening comes, passing showers, and coastal wind and salt air that wear down anything not built for them.
Each product we install answers a different part of that problem. Motorized screens close in the sides against insects, sun and wind. Overhead, retractable awnings and Equinox louvered roofs provide shade and keep the rain off the table, while TV enclosures, aluminum handrails and architectural louvers finish the space in materials that stand up to salt air.
Every product is measured on site and installed by our in-house crew, with a project manager on the job and our 5-year parts and labor warranty on the work. Start with the comparison below, read the product pages, or bring photos of your porch to the showroom on 51st Street.

Six products for porches, patios and decks
Each one is measured on site, built to the opening and installed by our own crew under the same 5-year warranty.

Motorized screens
FlexShade zip screens drop from a 5-inch headbox at the touch of a button and lock into side channels, so mosquitoes stay out and the fabric holds steady in the wind. Somfy motors run them from your phone or a voice assistant, and a single screen spans up to 25 feet.
- Up to 25 ft wide
- Wind tunnel tested over 100 mph
- Somfy motors
- Lifetime frame warranty

Retractable awnings
Alutech awnings roll out over a deck or patio in under a minute and block up to 98% of harmful UV rays. When closed, the arms and canvas fold into a protective hood with no poles left standing, and the LED lights in the arms run from the same remote as the awning.
- Up to 98% UV blocked
- LED lighting arms
- Crank override
- Semi cassette hood

Equinox louvered roofs
An all-metal patio roof in extruded aluminum whose louvers tilt open for sun and air and close against rain, with a built-in high-capacity gutter to carry the water away. Optional rain, wind and sun sensors adjust the louvers on their own, and a solar battery powers the motor without wired electricity.
- Extruded aluminum
- Optional weather sensors
- 20-year aluminum and paint warranty
- 3-year electrical warranty

TV enclosures
A motorized, powder-coated aluminum cabinet that shields an outdoor TV from sun, wind and rain and opens when it is time to watch. It is custom built for televisions up to 110 inches and plugs into a standard power outlet. The TV and its mounting bracket must be less than 8 inches deep in total and are not included.
- TVs up to 110 in
- Under 8 in total depth
- Standard outlet
- White, bronze or gray

Aluminum handrails
Patio, deck and balcony railings in high-grade aluminum that resists rust and corrosion and does not warp, crack or fade the way wood does. We tailor the color, style and size to the house, for homes and commercial buildings alike.
- High-grade aluminum
- Low maintenance
- Custom colors
- Residential and commercial

Decorative louvers
High-strength aluminum architectural louvers built to your design: a privacy wall, a screen around HVAC or pool equipment, or walls that protect an outdoor kitchen. One installation adds shade, privacy and security.
- High-strength aluminum
- Privacy walls
- Equipment screens
- Outdoor kitchens
Commercial patios that stay open in wind and rain
For a restaurant, an outdoor patio is extra seating and revenue, and unpredictable coastal weather can cost you customers. Year-round protection comes from two directions: a retractable awning overhead against rain and midday sun, and motorized screens around the perimeter against wind, bugs and driving rain, all run at the touch of a button.
We install the same systems on commercial lobbies, rooftop bars and restaurant dining areas, fitted to the building's architecture. Read how to protect a restaurant patio from wind and rain year-round.
- Awnings with LED lighting in the arms for evening service
- Screen fabric that keeps the view open while it blocks the wind
- Staff can adjust the whole space in seconds as the weather turns
- Our in-house crew installs, with a project manager on the job
Four decisions before you choose
We work through these with you at the estimate visit. Settling them first makes the product choice simple.
Name the problem
Afternoon sun, mosquitoes at dusk, rain on the table or wind off the water. Each points to a different product, as the table above shows.
Overhead or on the sides
Awnings and louvered roofs cover from above, and screens close in the sides. A porch exposed to the weather can take both.
Motorized or manual
Motors put screens and awnings on a button, a phone or a schedule, and our awnings have a crank override for power failures.
Plan for storm season
Ahead of a major storm, retract screens and awnings into their housings. Read how to protect a shade system from wind, and see hurricane shutters for the windows.
What island homeowners say
Every review here is from our Google listing, word for word.
The process with Galveston Shutter & Shade was simple and easy. From the initial bid process with Harvey, to the coordinated install with Suzy. They took the time to explain everything and get us what we needed. Highly recommend Galveston Shutter & Shade.
We are very pleased with the work they did. They have a good product. It was installed on time for exactly what they quoted. I would definitely recommend them.
Amazing company to work with. They did an incredible job matching a custom color to our existing shutters. Highly recommend!
Installed hurricane shutters both automatic and accordion style and Bahama shutters.
Outdoor living questions we hear most
Anything else, call (409) 502-2231 or ask at the showroom on 51st Street.
Can you add motorized screens to an existing covered porch or lanai?
Yes. At the estimate visit we check the structure of the porch, the mounting surfaces, access to power for the motors and how exposed the space is to wind, then recommend the system that fits. Our article on screening an existing porch or lanai walks through the process.
Which product keeps mosquitoes off the porch?
Motorized screens. The FlexShade Zip System holds the fabric edges in side channels along their full length, so insects cannot get past, and air still moves through the mesh. Awnings and louvered roofs shade from above and leave the sides open.
What happens to screens and awnings when a hurricane is coming?
Shade products are not storm shutters. FlexShade screens are wind tunnel tested to over 100 mph for everyday coastal wind, and ahead of a major storm you retract them into the headbox at the press of a button. Retractable awnings fold into their protective hood. For the windows and doors, see our hurricane shutters.
Do you install on restaurant and commercial patios?
Yes. Retractable awnings and motorized screens go on commercial lobbies, rooftop bars and restaurant dining areas as well as homes. Read how to protect a restaurant patio from wind and rain.
What warranties come with outdoor living products?
Every install carries our 5-year parts and labor warranty. Manufacturer coverage comes on top of it: FlexShade screens carry a lifetime warranty on the frame, 10 years on the screen and 5 years on the Somfy motor, and Equinox louvered roofs carry 20 years on aluminum parts and paint and 3 years on electrical items.
Can I run the screens and the awning from my phone?
Motorized screens run on Somfy motors with the TaHoma app, so you can raise and lower them from your phone, Alexa or Google Assistant, set schedules, and control them while you are away from home. Our retractable awnings are remote controlled, LED lights included.
