Storm shutters for Brazoria homes, inland on the Brazos
Brazoria is 16 miles up Highway 36 from Freeport and the coast, and hurricane wind travels that far easily. The Brazoria County ranch beside this text shows what we put on homes like it: roll-downs that sit out of sight all year and close over every French door before a storm.

Away from the beach, still in the wind
Brazoria is one of the oldest towns in Texas. John Austin laid it out in 1828 on land granted by Stephen F. Austin, on the Brazos River eight miles southwest of Angleton, and Stephen F. Austin declared against Santa Anna at a meeting here in September 1835. The Masonic Oak, where six Masons organized what is reportedly the first Masonic lodge in Texas that same year, still stands, and it has outlasted hurricanes and lightning strikes since.
The houses around it have had a rougher time. In 1909 a hurricane's wind leveled the train depot in Brazoria. When Beryl came ashore near Matagorda on July 8, 2024, the National Hurricane Center found hurricane-force gusts reaching inland over southeast Texas: 91 mph at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge and 85 mph at the Brazoria County Airport. In the City of Brazoria, fallen trees closed roads and damaged buildings.
Most homes in Brazoria are single-family houses, and the Census Bureau's survey puts the median year built at 1975, with about six in ten built before 1980. On a house that age, shutters protect the windows and doors already in it, with no need to replace them first. When the windows are due anyway, impact windows are the other route, and the city's permit covers a remodel that adds, removes or enlarges an opening.

Three ways to protect a house built before 1980
Which one fits depends on the openings, and on whether the original windows are staying. We look at every window and door when we measure.

Roll-downs
For French doors, patios and the back of the house. One curtain per opening, closed from a switch, a remote, a phone app or a hand crank.

Accordions
For rows of windows you would rather close by hand. They fold beside each window all year and lock with a key, with no power needed.

Impact windows
For original windows that are due for replacement anyway. The glass is the protection, so there is nothing to close before a storm.
See roll-down shutters, accordion shutters and impact windows for the full details.
The river and the wind are two different storms
Brazoria has been hit by both. Shutters answer one of them, and we would rather you hear which before you buy.
| In Brazoria | River flooding | Hurricane wind |
|---|---|---|
| Recent example | Harvey, 2017: the Brazos at West Columbia crested at 30.73 feet on September 3 | Beryl, 2024: fallen trees closed roads and damaged buildings in the city |
| What the Weather Service warns | At 27 feet on that gauge, low-lying homes in the City of Brazoria are threatened | Hurricane-force gusts can reach well inland, as they did in Beryl |
| Where it gets in | At ground level, wherever the water rises | Through broken windows and doors |
| Shutters | No help | Closed, they keep debris off the glass |
A large roll-down, with a remote and a wand
A customer on how we showed them every shutter after the install. 5.0 stars from 46 reviews on Google.
The team installed shutters for almost our entire house. The package we purchased included Bahama shutters, a large roll down shutter, and accordion shutters. After installing, they demonstrated how to adjust all of the types of storm shutters. The rolldown shutters have both a remote and a manual wand to open and shut them. The accordion shutters close securely with a key. We are very pleased with both the process and the quality of the shutters. The Bahamas shutters can be open and closed from within inside the house. These can be used both for storm protection and for privacy. We are very pleased!
Brazoria questions we hear most
Anything else, call (409) 502-2231. It is a long drive to the showroom, so we bring the samples to the estimate.
Do you come out as far as Brazoria?
Yes. Brazoria is 48 miles from our showroom at 902 51st St in a straight line, inside the 50-mile circle we serve. By road it is about 60 miles and an hour and a half, over San Luis Pass and up Highway 36 from Freeport. The estimate is free, and our own crew does the install.
Brazoria is inland. Does it really need hurricane shutters?
Hurricane wind does not stop at the beach. During Beryl in 2024, the National Hurricane Center found hurricane-force gusts reaching inland over southeast Texas, with 91 mph at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge and 85 mph at the Brazoria County Airport, and fallen trees damaged buildings in the City of Brazoria.
Will shutters help if the Brazos floods?
No. Shutters cover windows and doors against wind and flying debris. They do nothing about rising water, like the Brazos crest at West Columbia during Harvey in 2017. For flooding, talk to the city and your insurance agent; for the wind side of a hurricane, talk to us.
Do I need a city permit in Brazoria?
The City of Brazoria requires a permit for a remodel that adds or removes a window or door, or enlarges an opening for one. Shutters over existing openings are not on that list, so check with the city's building office at 979-798-2489, option 3. The city does not do windstorm inspections; those go through the Texas Department of Insurance.
Is Brazoria in the TWIA windstorm area?
Yes. Brazoria County is one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. On a TWIA-insured house, new windows, entry doors and garage doors need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.
