Beryl's hardest gust hit Freeport
Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda early on July 8, 2024, as a Category 1 storm, and some of its strongest wind reached Freeport. The Freeport Harbor station held 75 mph winds with gusts to 87 mph, and the station where Highway 36 crosses the Brazos River clocked a 97 mph gust, the highest the National Weather Service in Houston measured anywhere in the storm. Several 18-wheelers were blown onto their sides in town, and about 2.7 million people lost power across southeast Texas.
Freeport, Quintana and Surfside sit inside the Velasco Drainage District, which runs 50 miles of levees and 14 pump stations under a federal project authorized in 1962. That system is built for water. Wind is left to each house and business on its own, and that is where a shutter comes in: closed over the openings, it stops debris from breaking the glass, and an unbroken window keeps the storm out of the rooms behind it.
The Freeport Sulphur Company founded the town in 1912, three miles up from the mouth of the Brazos. In 1929 the river was diverted south of town, leaving the old riverbed as a protected harbor. Velasco, across the Old Brazos, where the Treaties of Velasco were signed in 1836, joined Freeport in 1957, and the city took in three and a half miles of Bryan Beach in 2003. Our Freeport estimates cover all of it, homes and businesses alike.

Shutters for the shop and the office
A roll-down shutter on a business covers storefront glass, office windows and full doorways, and it guards what is inside against break-ins as well as storms. It works indoors too. At a clinic in Angleton, 16 miles up Highway 288, we fitted a pair over the reception counter window (inset in the photo at the top of this page), so the front desk locks up behind an aluminum curtain when the office closes.
For a business, that means the same shutter earns its cost on ordinary nights, and when Brazoria County calls for an evacuation the building can be closed in minutes before you leave.
- Storefronts, offices, counters and doorways
- Wall switch, remote, smartphone app or hand crank
- Powder-coated to match the building
Garages and the widest openings
A garage door is the widest opening on most houses, and a roll-down is made to the width of each opening, so one curtain can close over it. The pair at the top of this page covers both doors of a two-car garage near Angleton. The same goes for a covered patio like this one, or a row of French doors.
For the windows, accordion shutters are the hand-operated choice: they fold beside each window all year, pull closed along a track, and lock with a key, with no power needed when the lines are down.
Storms that have come through Freeport
Water and wind both run through Freeport's storm record. The levees deal with the first; shutters are for the second.
| Year | Storm | In and around Freeport |
|---|---|---|
| 1900 | Great Storm | The Galveston hurricane wrecked the town of Velasco, now part of Freeport |
| 1932 | Freeport hurricane | A Category 4 that came ashore just east of Freeport on August 14 with 150 mph winds; about 40 people died |
| 1961 | Carla | Flooding did $2 million in damage at two Dow plants near Freeport |
| 1983 | Alicia | Hurricane-force winds along about 60 miles of coast, running northeast from Freeport |
| 2008 | Ike | A storm surge of 5 to 10 feet in Brazoria County, including near Freeport |
| 2021 | Nicholas | An 85 mph gust at Freeport Harbor and a 4-foot surge, with trees down from Sargent to Freeport |
| 2024 | Beryl | A 97 mph gust at the Highway 36 bridge, trucks blown over in town, and 5 to 7 feet of water from Matagorda to Freeport |

How far is Freeport from your showroom?
About 44 miles, a little over an hour, from our showroom at 902 51st St in Galveston. We drive down FM 3005, over the San Luis Pass bridge and along the Bluewater Highway through Surfside. Freeport is inside our 50-mile service area, and the estimate is free.
Do you put shutters on businesses in Freeport?
Yes. Roll-down shutters cover storefronts, office windows and full doorways, and they guard inventory against vandalism as well as storms. Inside a building they can close off a counter or pass-through window, like the clinic counter in Angleton shown on this page. One visit can price the business and your house.
We are inside the levee. Why shutter the house?
The Velasco Drainage District's levees and pump stations are there to keep water out. They do nothing about wind, and wind is what flipped tractor-trailers in Freeport during Beryl. A closed shutter stops flying debris from breaking a window or glass door, which is how a storm gets into the rooms behind it.
Do I need a city permit in Freeport?
The City of Freeport issues residential building permits for window and door work, and its fee schedule lists them. Shutters are not listed on their own, so call the Building Department at 1201 N. Avenue H before work starts.
Is Freeport in the TWIA windstorm area?
Yes. Freeport is in Brazoria County, one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. On a TWIA-insured house, new windows, entry doors and garage doors need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.
