Roll-down shutters, awnings and screens for Texas City homes
Texas City is 12 miles from our showroom, the closest mainland city we serve. Roll-down shutters are the product we put on Texas City houses most, and some of our favorite outdoor living jobs are here too.

The levee holds the water back. The wind still gets in.
After floods from Hurricane Carla in 1961, Texas City built a levee system that runs about 17 miles around most of the city, with pump stations along the northeast edge where it meets Galveston Bay, Dollar Bay and Moses Lake. When Hurricane Ike came ashore on September 13, 2008, its surge topped 12 feet over the Texas City Dike and destroyed every building on it, but the levee and pumps may have saved the city from widespread surge damage.
Inside the levee, the damage from Ike was mostly from wind and rain. That is the job a hurricane shutter does: it keeps wind-borne debris out of the glass so the wind and rain stay outside the house. A levee is no help with that, which is why Texas City homeowners call us.
Roll-down shutters top the list of what we install here. On the brick two-stories and ranch houses that make up our Texas City jobs, a row of roll-downs closes off a whole back wall or ground floor at once, and between storms the curtains roll up into a box over each opening. Texas City is in Galveston County, inside the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers, so new windows, entry doors and garage doors need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Roll-downs on Texas City houses
A roll-down shutter is a curtain of extruded aluminum slats that lowers from a box over the opening and locks into side tracks. Motorized ones run from a wall switch, a remote or a smartphone app, so you can close the house from your phone if you are away when a storm turns toward the coast. Manual ones use a crank and need no power at all.
They earn their keep between storms too. Closed, they block the afternoon sun off a west wall and keep a house locked up tight while you travel.
- Built to the width of each window, door or porch opening
- Wall switch, remote, phone app or hand crank
- Storm, security and shade from one system
The outdoor living side of Texas City
Two of our Texas City jobs were about using the yard rather than closing up the house. Under one raised home, motorized screens drop into tracks around a ground-floor outdoor kitchen and keep the bugs and the afternoon sun out. At another, a striped retractable awning shades the dining table beside the pool and rolls back into its hood when the wind picks up.
The same crew installs both, with the same 5-year warranty on parts and labor, and one estimate can cover shutters on the front of the house and shade on the back.

Galveston Shutter & Shade are fabulous! We had an issue with the GFCI tripping after the Saturday rainstorms so could not raise our rollup shutters except manually. We dropped by the office on 51st St and they got right on it. Eddie and Koby came out today and assessed the situation. They recaulked the exterior electrical box and recommended painting over the caulk to help preserve the seal. In addition, they were very helpful in providing a tool that I can use on my drill to help manually raise tge shutters incase of whole house power failure. All the staff we have interacted with are polite, professional, efficient and effective. Galveston Shutter & Shade is a 5 star company as a result!
Texas City questions we hear most

Doesn't the Texas City levee make shutters unnecessary?
The levee and its pump stations hold back storm surge from Galveston Bay, Dollar Bay and Moses Lake, and they did that job during Hurricane Ike. They do nothing about wind. Ike's damage across Texas City was mostly from wind and rain, and wind-borne debris through a window is the damage a shutter is built to stop.
How far is Texas City from your showroom?
About 12 miles, or 17 minutes, from our showroom at 902 51st St in Galveston. That makes it the closest mainland city we serve, and a visit to the showroom to see the shutters in person is a short drive across the causeway.
Can a roll-down shutter cover the whole ground floor?
Yes. A roll-down curtain is built to the width of each opening, so a row of them can close off a ground floor of windows and doors, as on the Texas City pool house at the top of this page. Motorized systems run from a wall switch, a remote or a smartphone app, and manual systems use a crank.
Do you install awnings and screens in Texas City too?
Yes. Some of our Texas City jobs are outdoor living: a striped retractable awning over a pool patio, and motorized screens around a ground-floor outdoor kitchen under a raised house. See our retractable awnings and motorized screens pages for the details.
Is Texas City in the TWIA windstorm area?
Yes. Texas City is in Galveston County, one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties in the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. TWIA lists windows, entry doors and garage doors among the work that needs a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.
