Accordion and Bahama shutters for Dickinson homes

Permanent storm shutters you close by hand, with no tools and no power. Accordions are what Dickinson homeowners pick most from us, and the house beside this text shows why: folded away all year, pulled shut in minutes before a storm.

Dickinson Bayou, Harvey, and the storm that comes next

Dickinson Bayou runs through the middle of Dickinson on its way to Dickinson Bay, and the city sits between League City and Texas City about 20 miles from our showroom. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey's rain flooded about 90 percent of the city, and about half of it was destroyed by flooding.

Shutters would not have stopped any of that, and we will not tell you otherwise. Floodwater and wind are different jobs. What a shutter does is keep wind and flying debris from breaking the glass, which is how rain and pressure get into a house during a hurricane. Dickinson is in Galveston County, inside the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers, and the wind side of the next storm is the part you can prepare for.

A lot of Dickinson has been rebuilt and renovated since Harvey. If yours is one of those houses, storm protection fits naturally into the work: plan the shutters while the windows are being chosen, and remember that new windows, entry doors and garage doors on a TWIA-insured house need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Accordions: on the house all year, closed in minutes

An accordion shutter is a row of extruded aluminum blades on a track along the window. Between storms the blades sit folded at the sides. Before a storm you pull each side out until they meet, then lock them with a key or a thumb turn.

There is nothing to store in the garage, nothing to haul out before a storm and nothing that needs power, which counts in a county where Ike and Beryl both left people without electricity for days. That is the whole reason they are the shutter Dickinson buys from us most.

  • No tools, no batteries, no storage
  • Locks with a key or a thumb turn
  • Stays on the house between storms

Bahamas for the windows you want to shade

On the sunny side of the house, Bahama shutters do two jobs. Propped open, they shade the glass before the sun reaches it and leave the view clear underneath. Lowered and locked, they cover the window for a storm. A Dickinson house can have both: accordions where you only need storm cover, Bahamas where you want shade too.

Every type comes with the same 5-year warranty on parts and labor and the same in-house crew for service.

Dickinson questions we hear most

Anything else, call (409) 502-2231 or come by the showroom on 51st Street.

Do you install shutters in Dickinson?

Yes. Dickinson is about 20 miles from our showroom at 902 51st St in Galveston, inside our 50-mile service area. Accordion shutters are what we install most often in Dickinson, with Bahama shutters next. The estimate is free and our own crew installs.

Will hurricane shutters protect my house from flooding?

No. Shutters keep wind and wind-borne debris out of windows and doors. Harvey flooded about 90 percent of Dickinson in 2017 with rain and rising water, and no shutter stops that. We tell every Dickinson homeowner the same thing, so you know what you are paying for.

Can I close accordion shutters by myself?

Yes. Each side pulls along its track until the two halves meet, then locks with a key or a thumb turn. It takes no tools and no batteries, which matters when the power is out, and the blades stay folded at the sides of the window between storms.

We are renovating. Is this a good time to add shutters?

It is a good time to plan them. We measure the openings once the windows and trim are in, and if you are replacing windows on a house you insure through TWIA, the new windows need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance. Call us while you are planning and we will fit the estimate around your schedule.

Do upstairs windows need a different kind of shutter?

Not necessarily. The Dickinson house on this page has accordions on its second-floor windows. Permanent shutters such as accordions, roll-downs and Bahamas stay on the house, so there are no heavy panels to carry up before every storm. At the estimate we show you how each shutter on your house is closed.
