Hurricane shutters for Kemah homes and storefronts
Kemah is a small town on the bay where houses and businesses sit a few blocks apart, and our Kemah jobs look the same way: shutters on three-story homes and raised decks, and a roll-down on a storefront. Measured and installed by our own crew from Galveston.

A bay town that has rebuilt before
Kemah sits in the northeast corner of Galveston County on the west shore of Galveston Bay, with Highway 146 through the middle and the Clear Creek Channel separating it from Seabrook to the north. The channel opened in the 1950s and brought the shrimp fleet; Landry's opened the Kemah Boardwalk in the late 1990s and brought the crowds.
The bay brings the storms too. Hurricane Carla badly damaged the town in 1961. When Hurricane Ike came ashore on September 13, 2008, Kemah took about 5 feet of floodwater, the first floor of Landry's on the Boardwalk was swept away, homes and businesses were destroyed and the streets were buried in trees and debris.
Shutters do not stop a surge. They keep wind and the debris it throws out of the glass, and on a property right on the bay that is a lot of what a storm does. Kemah is inside the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers, so on an insured house, new windows, entry doors and garage doors need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Kemah homes: decks, raised floors and wide openings
The Kemah houses we work on are tall, with decks, porches and wide openings that a plywood sheet will not cover. A roll-down shutter is built to the width of each one and rolls up into a box overhead between storms. Close it from a wall switch, a remote or your phone, or with a hand crank on a manual system.
On the upper windows of a three-story house, louvered Bahama-style shutters shade the glass from the afternoon sun off the water and come down over it for a storm.
- Built to the width of decks, porches and garages
- Powder-coated aluminum for bay air
- One estimate for every opening on the property
Kemah businesses: storm cover that locks up every night
On a storefront, a roll-down does a job every day of the year. It locks the glass when you close, so the windows are covered against break-ins overnight, and it is already in place when a storm turns toward the bay. Nothing to cut, carry or store, and no one has to be on site with a drill before the evacuation order.
We install roll-downs, accordions and TAPCO screens on businesses as well as homes, with the same crew and the same 5-year warranty. Our guide to security shutters for storefronts compares the options.

We are very pleased with the work they did. They have a good product. It was installed on time for exactly what they quoted. I would definitely recommend them.
Kemah questions we hear most
Anything else, call (409) 502-2231 or visit the showroom on 51st Street.
Do you put shutters on businesses in Kemah?
Yes. One of our Kemah jobs is a roll-down shutter beside a drive-thru window, shown on this page. A roll-down covers a storefront, a service window or a door at the push of a button, locks the business at night and closes it for a storm. Our article on security shutters for storefronts has more.
Can you close in the space under a raised house?
Yes. Under-deck and ground-floor openings on raised houses are wide, and a roll-down shutter is built to the width of each one. We installed one under a deck in Kemah, in the photos on this page. Closed, it keeps storm debris out; open, it disappears into a box overhead.
Is Kemah in the TWIA windstorm area?
Yes. Kemah is in Galveston County, one of the first-tier coastal counties in the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. Seabrook, just across the Clear Creek Channel, is in Harris County, where only the part east of Highway 146 is covered.
How far is Kemah from your showroom?
About 24 miles, or 33 minutes, from our showroom at 902 51st St in Galveston. Kemah is inside our 50-mile service area, and the estimate is free.
Do shutters hold up to salt air on the bay?
Our shutters are aluminum with a powder-coated finish, the same materials we install a few blocks from the Gulf on Galveston Island. Every install carries our 5-year warranty on parts and labor, and our own crew handles service calls.
