Hurricane shutters for Clear Lake area homes
Clear Lake City, Nassau Bay, Webster, El Lago and Taylor Lake Village sit just outside the insurance map for windstorm, and well inside the path of Gulf hurricanes. We put Bahama and accordion shutters on Clear Lake area homes, measured and installed by our own crew from Galveston.

Outside the windstorm map, inside the storm track
Clear Lake City grew up around NASA. Humble Oil's Friendswood Development Company planned it after the Johnson Space Center was sited next door, the community association started in 1963, and Houston annexed it in 1977 over residents' objections. Around it are Nassau Bay, Webster, El Lago and Taylor Lake Village, with Clear Lake, Armand Bayou and Horsepen Bayou running through the area.
Because it is Harris County west of Highway 146, the Clear Lake area is outside the region the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. There is no TWIA certificate of compliance to file when you replace windows or doors here. That is the paperwork side. The weather side is that Hurricane Ike's gusts were reported above 100 mph near Clear Lake, Mission Control's roof was damaged, and the docks and businesses along NASA Road 1 in Nassau Bay were destroyed.
The shutters that make sense here are the ones a homeowner can live with every day. On our Clear Lake area jobs that has meant Bahama shutters on two-story homes and accordions around a patio, both of which stay on the house and close by hand when a storm is coming.

Bahamas for a two-story on the lake side
The Clear Lake area house above has white Bahama shutters over a row of second-floor windows and more along its stone ground floor. Propped open, they shade the glass from the afternoon sun. Lowered and locked, they cover it for a storm, with nothing to carry out of the garage.
For arched windows we make eyebrow Bahamas that follow the curve, and for corners of glass like the patio at the top of this page, accordion shutters fold out of the way on tracks built to each run.

We are so happy with our new eyebrow shutters from Galveston Shutter & Shade Co.! Harvey was very patient and helpful throughout the process while we worked through the style, sizing, color, and placement. We chose matte black adjustable eyebrow shutters for our kitchen windows, and they turned out beautifully. They look amazing from the outside and have already made a noticeable difference with the direct sun and heat coming into our kitchen, while still allowing us to enjoy the view. The installation team was professional, and everything came together exactly as we hoped. We would definitely recommend Galveston Shutter & Shade Co.!
Clear Lake questions we hear most
Anything else, call (409) 502-2231 or visit the showroom on 51st Street.
Is Clear Lake in the TWIA windstorm area?
No. Clear Lake City and the Houston neighborhoods around it are in Harris County west of Highway 146, and TWIA's area in Harris County is limited to the parts of five cities east of the highway: Seabrook, La Porte, Shoreacres, Pasadena and Morgan's Point. A TWIA policy and its certificate of compliance are not part of a window or door project here.
Then are shutters worth it in Clear Lake?
The insurance map does not change the wind. During Hurricane Ike in 2008, gusts over 100 mph were reported near Clear Lake, the roof of NASA's Mission Control Center was damaged and boat docks and businesses along NASA Road 1 in Nassau Bay were destroyed. A shutter keeps that kind of wind and the debris it carries out of your windows.
Do you serve Nassau Bay, Webster, El Lago and Taylor Lake Village?
Yes. They border Clear Lake City and are inside our 50-mile service area, about 30 miles from our showroom at 902 51st St in Galveston. The estimate is free and our own crew installs.
Can accordion shutters close in a patio or sunroom?
Yes. The Clear Lake patio in the photos on this page has accordion shutters along a corner of glass walls, folded open on most days and pulled closed around the whole space for a storm. Accordions run on tracks built to each opening, so long and angled runs of glass are no problem.
Do you install eyebrow Bahama shutters?
Yes. Eyebrow Bahamas follow the curve of an arched window, and one of the reviews on this page is from a customer who chose them. Bring photos of your arched windows to the estimate or ask us to measure them.
