One city, two counties, one creek between them
Clear Creek runs through Friendswood and splits it between two counties. South of the creek is Galveston County and Friendswood ISD. North of it is Harris County and Clear Creek ISD. For most errands the line makes no difference. For windstorm insurance it does: the Galveston County side is inside the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers, and the Harris County side is not.
The storms do not stop at the creek. Friendswood sits about 32 miles from our showroom, far enough inland that surge is not the worry, and close enough that hurricane winds still arrive. When Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda on July 8, 2024, more than 2.7 million homes and businesses across Texas lost power.
The water is a separate problem. Major flooding in Friendswood comes when Clear Creek rises, and Harvey devastated the city in 2017. Shutters do nothing about rising water, and we will tell you so at the estimate. What they do is keep wind and debris out of the windows and doors.

Colonials that close, on houses built for them
A stone or brick two-story with tall windows looks right with shutters at its sides, and many houses wear decorative ones fixed to the wall. Our colonial shutters are the working kind: powder-coated aluminum on hinges, in louvered, raised panel or board and batten styles, that swing closed over the glass and lock with a storm bar.
The Friendswood house above chose a louvered style in tan against white stone, and from the street the shutters read as part of the house.
Side windows, bays and the back of the house
Not every opening needs to be pretty. On side and back windows, accordion shutters stay folded at the edges of the frame and pull closed along a track, then lock with a key or a thumb turn. No tools, no batteries and nothing to store.
Rounded bay windows are a different problem, and Bahama shutters solve it, one per window around the curve, as on the Friendswood house in our photo at the top of the page. Propped open, they shade the glass all summer. Lowered, they cover it for a storm.

The team installed shutters for almost our entire house. The package we purchased included Bahama shutters, a large roll down shutter, and accordion shutters. After installing, they demonstrated how to adjust all of the types of storm shutters. The rolldown shutters have both a remote and a manual wand to open and shut them. The accordion shutters close securely with a key. We are very pleased with both the process and the quality of the shutters. The Bahamas shutters can be open and closed from within inside the house. These can be used both for storm protection and for privacy. We are very pleased!

Is Friendswood in the TWIA windstorm area?
Part of it. Friendswood south of Clear Creek is in Galveston County, which is inside the area the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association covers. Friendswood north of the creek is in Harris County, and TWIA's area in Harris County is limited to parts of five cities east of Highway 146, none of them Friendswood. Your school district is a quick check: Friendswood ISD is the Galveston County side, Clear Creek ISD the Harris County side.
Do I need a windstorm certificate for shutters or windows?
On the Galveston County side, if you insure through TWIA, new windows, entry doors and garage doors need a certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance. TWIA's list does not name shutters. On the Harris County side the TWIA requirement does not apply. Ask at the estimate and we will go over your house.
Are your colonial shutters decorative or real storm shutters?
They work. Our colonial shutters are powder-coated aluminum on hinges, in louvered, raised panel or board and batten styles, and they close over the window and lock with a storm bar. On a stone or brick house in Friendswood they look like the shutters the house was designed for, and they cover the glass when a storm comes.
Will shutters help with flooding from Clear Creek?
No. Shutters protect windows and doors from wind and the debris it carries. They do nothing to stop rising water, and major flooding in Friendswood comes when Clear Creek rises. We would rather say so than sell you something for the wrong job.
